Goal
Want to record your rehearsal? Want to save a livestream for later?
JackTrip Radio saves your public broadcasts automatically to the cloud. But sometimes it's useful to record an Unlisted broadcast instead. This guide will show you how to record an Unlisted broadcast using either a Chrome browser plug-in or software called OBS:
- Chrome Audio Capture (plug-in)
- OBS (software)
Chrome Audio Capture Example:
Installation
To add the plug-in to your browser, click the link provided above to get to the install page. Click the
"Add to Chrome" button and accept the warning provided in the top center of the page. Once installed, it should look like the screenshot.
To remove the plug-in, click "Remove from Chrome". To access the plug-in once installed, click the puzzle icon
"Remove from Chrome" circled in Red
"Puzzle icon" circled in blue
Recording
To make a recording, navigate to the broadcast page of your studio (provided by the studio admin) and click the play button to start the broadcast. Then, click the puzzle icon to open the plug-ins page, select the "Chrome Audio Capture" and click "Start Capture". See screenshot below
Plug-in icon circled in blue
Start Capture circled in red
After you have recorded what you'd like, click the save recording button. The plug-in will take you to a page where you can then download the audio recording that you took.
NOTE: The plug-in can currently only record 20 minute segments. You will have to restart the recording after downloading the first segment if you wish to record longer segments.
OBS Example
OBS is an incredible software for all sorts of Audio/Visual uses. It's basically a mini production studio that can create an audio/video feed from multiple sources, and route the audio and video seamlessly to Youtube, Twitch, Facebook Live, or any other streaming platform. You can also use it to simply record the audio and video onto your computer, which can then be uploaded to a platform like YouTube.
OBS is a little more complicated to use than the other application we mentioned, but that's because it is so massively useful! Let's pause to appreciate that we can install a mini production studio on our computer for free. That's awesome.
Installation
Download OBS from their website (link) and choose the right installer for your platform. Run the installer and follow the steps to install OBS properly. After you've installed it, it should look something like the screenshot below. The circles show where to find the "Scenes", "Sources", and "Start Recording" (text color corresponds with circle color.) We will explain how to use OBS below.
Scenes and Sources
Presumably, you'd like to stream/record both the JackTrip audio. Any audio or video element that you add to the Scene is called a Source. Sources can include audio files, video files, images, sounds from applications like video games, and much much more. Check out the list of Sources that OBS can support- it's a pretty long list!
Here's a great resource for understanding Scenes and Sources in OBS: https://obsproject.com/wiki/Sources-Guide
Adding JackTrip Radio Audio to the Scene
To add the audio, click the plus sign in the Sources section. Select the "Audio Output Capture", "Create new", name your output, and select what device it will listen to. (We selected the default output device, but you can select whatever options you have available. Make sure that your browser is playing the audio to the same audio device that OBS is recording from.)
Start Recording!
Head to the radio page of the broadcast, provided by your studio admin, and start the broadcast (Red circle). Then head to OBS and click "Start Recording". Congrats! You're now recording your private broadcast.
Video?
OBS also records video while it's recording audio (that's the usual use case for OBS). You can capture your screen, application display (like a Zoom gallery), images, and lots more. Check out https://obsproject.com/wiki/ for more information.
Note: this guide doesn't cover everything about OBS, but there are tons of resources on how to make the most out of OBS with whatever platform you choose. Check out the great resources provided by the OBS wiki here: https://obsproject.com/wiki/
